Set up EU VAT
How to configure EU VAT in Foxy using the European Union tax type, including customer-country rates, origin-country rates, a flat EU rate, and per-country rates.
Overview
Foxy's European Union tax type covers the common EU VAT scenarios. Foxy is not a tax advisor, so confirm your obligations with a tax professional.
How to set it up
Create a tax in the Foxy admin, set the Type to European Union, then choose one of these approaches:
Charge each customer's country rate (automatic): turn on Calculate tax automatically, set the Service provider to Foxy Default, and leave use the origin country tax rates set to no.
Charge your store's country rate to all EU customers: turn on Calculate tax automatically, set use the origin country tax rates to yes, and set the country whose rate should apply.
Charge a single flat rate to any EU customer: turn off Calculate tax automatically and enter the Fixed rate.
Charge per-country rates individually: for products whose rates vary by country, create individual Country taxes (roughly thirty, one per member state) as needed.
Automatic VAT rates come from an open-source tax-rate library. There is no warranty of accuracy, but Foxy will update rates when an issue is reported.
Notes
Displaying VAT-inclusive prices. Because some products are taxed at the customer's country rate, showing a final price before the customer's country is known is difficult. See Set up tax-inclusive pricing.
Confirming a customer's country. EU rules expect two corroborating pieces of data. Foxy's geo-IP lookup is highly accurate and the customer also enters their address, but a customer could change their country and create a mismatch.
Data retention. Be aware of your own data-retention obligations. Foxy may purge data from inactive stores, so keep your own backups if you cancel.
Tax ID validation. The tax ID field is not validated. See Exempt customers with a tax ID.
